airbag deployment, airbag safety, Lake County personal injury attorney, motor vehicle safety, airbag deployment injuriesDevelopment of the first airbag restraint systems began in the late 1950’s, monumentally altering the landscape of motor vehicle safety. Airbags were commercially introduced in 1973 with the General Motors’ Oldsmobile Toronado. Over the next 15 years, other automobile manufacturers also began developing and implementing vehicle passenger safety equipment.

In 1988, Chevrolet became the first motor vehicle company to provide customers with airbag restraint systems throughout the entirety of their passenger fleet. Over the following decades, car companies across the world have been working to enhance the safety, strength, and overall functionality of airbag restraint systems. The results have been overwhelmingly positive.

Statistics gathered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) state that airbag restraint systems saved over 39,976 lives between the years 1987 and 2012. As manufacturers continue to innovate and design safer ways to protect vehicle drivers and passengers, airbags continue to save lives—but not without risks.

One small mistake by a driver can result in a serious crash and major injuries to everyone involved. The consequences of hitting a construction worker are severe; doing so may result in up to $10,000 in fines and 14 years in prison.

In order to provide a safe environment for everyone on the road, drivers should follow these tips when driving in construction zones:

car seat safety, car seat safety guidelines, Lake County car accident attorney, motor vehicle safety, motor vehicle accidentAs a parent, you want to do everything you can to keep your children safe, and this is especially true when you are in the car. Using a safe car seat can ensure that children are properly protected in any car accidents, but parents may not be aware of which types of car seats are appropriate for children at different ages.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recently released new guidelines for car seat safety. This update came following a study published in the Journal of Pediatrics which found that only 62 percent of the parents participating in the study used a rear-facing car seat for children 17-19 months old. The study also found that parents who spoke with pediatricians about car seat safety and were aware of AAP guidelines were more likely to use rear-facing car seats.

Illinois personal injury lawyer, Illinois wrongful death attorney, Illinois car accident lawyer,As consumers, there are certain products that we purchase where we put our trust in the manufacturer that the product will protect our loved ones the way it is supposed to. One of the most important products that parents purchase is car seats. We purchase the car seat for the purpose of protecting our most precious cargo – our children – in the event of a vehicle crash. However, over the past few months, several car seat manufacturers have announced recalls of their products due to defects that could cause potential malfunction of the product in a crash.

In July, Recaro Child Safety, L.L.C. announced they were recalling almost 174,000 car seats. Make and models of seats being recalled include ProRIDE model number 332.01 (all colors) which were made between April 2010 through June 2015. The company is also recalling Performance RIDE model number 333.01 (all colors) which were made between January 2013 through June 2015. According to statements released by the company, the top tether anchorage may detach from the car seat shell in an accident. Recaro is providing a retrofit kit which will repair the dangerous issue, free of charge.

Britax Child Safety, Inc. announced their own car seat recall in August due to a defect in the harness adjuster button of certain seat models. Three models, Advocate ClickTight, Boulevard ClickTight, and Marathon ClickTight which were made between August 2014 and July 2015, have all been found to have the defect. According to the company, the release button in the harness may actually stay in the release position, even after the consumer has tightened the harness, again leaving the child at risk in the event of an accident. The company is also providing a kit to repair the defect, free of charge.
