During peak travel times, such as morning and late afternoon rush hours, those traveling by car and by foot are equally in a hurry to get to their next destination. The nature of the “rush” mentality mixed with the roadway congestion is sadly the perfect recipe for potential collision.

Since 2014, The Illinois Department of Transportation and the Division of Traffic Safety reported that:

• 48.2 percent of all fatal crashes occur during daylight hours;
• The greatest number of crashes occurs on Fridays;
• The second largest number of crashes occurs on Tuesdays;
• 69.2 percent of all crashes occur between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 7:59 p.m.; and
• The greatest number of fatal accidents occurs on Sundays, while the second largest number of fatal accidents occurs on Saturdays.

These statistics are also reported to be dependent upon the type of roadway. For example, the greatest number of fatal crashes that have taken place on Sundays have occurred more frequently on rural roadways, whereas a large percentage of non-fatal crashes that occur between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 7:59 p.m. take place on urban roadways.
