Pedestrian Accidents: Are Wheelchair-Bound Pedestrians More Vulnerable?

Posted on December 00, 0000 in Pedestrian Accidents

Illinois personal injury lawyer, Illinois wrongful death attorney, Illinois car accident lawyer,Pedestrians are already at a high risk of mortality when involved in an automobile accident, but a recent study suggests that wheelchair users are especially vulnerable. This new information encourages drivers to be more aware of pedestrians in wheelchairs. It also highlights the need for added diligence in creating safer areas for all pedestrians.

The Devastating Statistics for All Pedestrians

In the United States, nearly 5,000 pedestrians are killed in automobile accidents each year. Another 76,250 are injured each year on roadways. They are especially vulnerable when weather conditions become hazardous, and when distracted drivers fail to pay close attention to the non-vehicle members out and about each day.

Wheelchair Pedestrians at Higher Risk

To determine their vulnerability, researchers analyzed information from 2006 to 2012 using a reporting system that keeps track of all fatal accidents. They calculated that as many as 528 pedestrians using wheelchairs died in traffic and pedestrian accidents. Nearly half of those accidents took place at intersections, 39 percent occurred in places where there were no traffic devices, and 18 percent occurred in an area where no crosswalk was available. Overall, their death rate was found to be one third higher than non-wheelchair using pedestrians.

Keeping Pedestrians Safe

Crosswalks and traffic devices can go a long way in protecting pedestrians. However, it is important that all drivers practice due diligence at intersections, and in areas where pedestrian traffic is high. Drivers should also work to be more aware of children and wheelchair pedestrians, both of which are often smaller than adult pedestrians and less likely to act as expected when in danger. Wheelchair users may also have the added risk of being unable to move or stop quickly when presented with an oncoming car.

Pedestrian Death or Injury? Seek Assistance from an Experienced Personal Injury Attorney

Because pedestrians are at such high risk for death and injury when involved in automobile accidents, they should be met with extra care and compassion when facing a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. For this reason, it is suggested that victims and their families seek assistance from a skilled personal injury attorney.
