Drunk Drivers Continue to Cause Car Accidents on Illinois Roads

Posted on August 22, 2018 in Drunk Driving Accidents

Chicago drunk driving car accident attorneyRecently, a man was charged with a DUI after his involvement in a fatal three-vehicle crash in Schaumburg. Emergency personnel were called to the scene shortly after the accident, and one of the vehicle drivers passed away from injuries hours after the collision. The 25-year-old man was charged with the DUI, and he was allegedly driving under the influence of illegal drugs when he collided with two different vehicles before driving into a field off of East Schaumburg Avenue.

The tragedy marks just the latest motor vehicle accident involving drugs or alcohol in the greater Chicago area. If you or your family are impacted by the negligent and reckless actions of a drunk driver, finding proper legal representation can help you obtain the legal guidance and financial compensation you deserve.

DUI Statistics Throughout Illinois

While the dangers of drunk driving are well known, inebriated drivers continue to cause massive problems and safety issues on Illinois roadways. According to the 2018 DUI Fact Book published by Illinois Secretary of State, approximately one in every four fatal car accidents throughout the state involved the presence of alcohol. In 2016 alone, there were approximately 272 people fatally injured in car crashes in Illinois involving alcohol.

While many people assume that most drivers who drive drunk are repeat offenders, many new drivers are electing to make the reckless decision of driving while they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Statistics compiled by the Secretary of State found that 86% of all those arrested for DUI throughout the state in 2016 were first-time offenders. In all, just under 30,000 DUI arrests were made statewide in 2016.

Who Is Driving Under the Influence?

Throughout the state of Illinois, males aged 21-24 had the highest DUI rate of any demographic. In fact, 75% of all those arrested for DUI throughout the state in 2016 were men. Regardless of gender, the majority of drivers electing to drive under the influence throughout the state are relatively young. According to the Illinois Secretary of State, 57% of all drivers caught driving under the influence in 2016 were under the age of 34.
