Study Highlights Divide in Opinions and Behaviors on Driving Safety

"Do as I say, not as I do,” are the results of a new study that examined driver attitudes and rates of risky driving. According to the AAA Foundation’s ninth annual Traffic Safety Culture Index, motor vehicle drivers disapprove of driving behavior such as texting while driving and driving under the influence, yet many drivers admit to the same dangerous habits. These are the dangerous habits that cause motor vehicle accidents and put more cautious drivers at risk of property damage, bodily injury and even death.

Study Reveals Driver Hypocrisy

The study asked drivers about their attitudes and driving patterns in relation to several important safety issues. The study reports that:

• About 70 percent of drivers believe it is completely unacceptable to not wear a seatbelt while driving. However, 16.7 percent of drivers admit to driving without a safety belt in the past month.
• Most drivers say they find texting and emailing while behind the wheel unacceptable, yet almost one in three admit to typing while driving in the past month. Two in five admit to reading a text or email in the same time period.
• Nearly all drivers (96.7 percent) disapprove of drinking and driving. However, one in eight drivers admits to driving at least once in the past year when their BAC was approaching or maybe above the legal limit.
• The vast majority of drivers (95.6 percent) believe that drowsy driving is a serious threat. About three in ten drivers, however, report to have driven when they find it difficult to keep their eyes open due to sleepiness within the past month.

Dangerous Driving Affects Many People

According to the report, nearly one in five drivers has been involved in a car accident that required someone to be treated at the hospital. One in nine drivers reports that they have been seriously injured in a car accident. In addition, about one in three drivers say that a friend or family member has been seriously injured or killed in a car accident.
